With the melting of glaciers, the disappearance of necessary sea ice, and sea levels rising, our everyday actions, magnified, affect whether these ecological archives and ecosystems will survive. Climate change has forced Arctic and Antarctic species to migrate and adapt, though at a far quicker pace than adaption generally occurs, and migration of species creates inherent challenges to endemic/native species. Having experienced the immensity of Arctic glaciers, as well as the psychological devastation of standing on unmapped land, land that was until recently covered by a glacier, I wish to bring this experience home, to create understanding through experience and perception, to allow someone who may not have the opportunity to be in the physical space of a glacier, to be in the psychological space of a glacier. These collages are in part developed from exposing light sensitive paper to plastics and glass, using known pollutants of the sea to render the trapped gases stored in the layers of glaciers, gases which when studied illustrate the level of ecosystem health, gases that as we fail to act on climate change transform from stored information to lost evidence.

ancient trapped seas

The gouache drawings of ancient trapped seas are variations on a theme: the shadows of plastic flowers observed. As plastics continue to pollute all ecosystems, these drawings project the loss of critical ocean biomes. The cyanotypes of ancient trapped seas also developed from plastics--both mass-produced and handmade--to create organic forms, shadows of false pelagic species, artifacts of inorganic accumulation rather than organic growth, the ghosts of coral ecosystems.

economy of nature

The economy of nature series began by recycling the negative spaces from the distorted senses of proportion collages. After each individual ink on paper element was cut out, the negative spaces became the positive spaces of the economy of nature series. In turn, the collaged elements of the economy of nature series were then layered on paper and cut out again, leaving those negative spaces to create the final series recycled environments.

Distorted Senses of Proportionis a slight modification to a phrase from Silent Spring, Rachel Carson’s ever relevant text from 1962, which addresses our environmental actions and the ensuing consequences. “Future historians may well be amazed by our distorted sense of proportion. How could intelligent beings seek to control a few unwanted species by a method that contaminated the entire environment and brought the threat of disease and death even to their own kind?” (p.8)

invasive species

Invasive Species considers the issue of loss due to the introduction of foreign species of insect, fungus, plant, and pathogens. Environmental change in the public discourse has largely been focused on industry and urban sprawl. What of the loss accelerated through the introduction of natural factors via globalization (trade) and climate change (the alteration of migration patterns and temperature changes promoting ideal climates for foreign species to thrive.) Action and consequence are addressed here through works focused on endemic versus nonnative flora and fauna. Many of the pieces address invasive species, particularly the ones we choose to introduce to our environments for their inherent beauty, ones that, as we look at their beauty in the present, pose a danger for the ecological balance of the future. Often we introduce these plants and animals without considering that with them come diseases, different life cycles and competitions, unique inherent relationships. We unconsciously, and sometimes selectively so, live in the moment of beauty without considering the consequences in the future to both the micro and macro.

precipitates

Precipitates began as an investigation into the apparent over population of bull kelp in the near-shore waters of British Columbia. Was there a causal relationship between global warming, rising sea temperatures, the loss of coastal environments and the prima facie abundance of bull kelp in the northern Pacific waters? On the contrary, bull kelp forest populations, with their preference for cold water conditions, will be adversely affected by the rising sea temperatures associated with global warming. The species, however, thrive in carbon dioxide rich environments, and the presence of higher levels of carbon dioxide could very well offset some of the negative impacts of increased water temperatures. These contradictory connections between cause and effect speak to the complex relationships between action and consequence, specific ecosystems and the environment as a whole.
